Shaw's Bridge cottage to be restored

The Lock-Keeper's Cottage at Shaw's Bridge, at one time nominated for the BBC "Restoration" programme, is to become a tourist attraction. The cottage, which is owned by Castlereagh Borough Council, is to become an interpretative centre and will have its doors, windows and roof replaced. It is also proposed to construct a similar building nearby to serve as a refreshment area. The four-room cottage, which dates from the early nineteenth century and was once home to twelve people, lies beside the disused Lagan Navigation Canal. The last member of the last family to live there, Dorothy McBride (nee Kilpatrick) sold the building to the council in the early nineties.
